Cemetery Walk: A Cozy, Spring Sleep Story

Evening approaches and the sun is still out sharing its warmth and light.  It’s the perfect time for a walk to wind down for the day. You casually meander through town until you arrive at the local cemetery and you’ve realized that you’ve never been inside the gates.

You walk towards the entrance and are greeted by birdsong and the scent of flowers and freshly trimmed grass. The sounds and scents draw you inside the gates and down the winding path, past the front mausoleums and graves The bright green grass is neatly trimmed but wildflowers have taken over a few spots, some even seemed to have been deliberatelplanted around the graves.

You notice a bench near a cluster of graves and take a seat. A gentle breeze blows through your hair as the sunbeams warm your face. It’s a good day to visit the cemetery. You are surprised by how peaceful it is. You always assumed it would be spooky and sad, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

You eventually get up and wander further into the cemetery. You find yourself drawn to a far corner by the fence separating the burial grounds from the forest. You walk past graves and crypts, big and small, fancy and plain until you come to what must be the last resting place on this side of the cemetery. It is a small white, mausoleum that is surrounded by tiny, purple flowers. Were they mushrooms, it would have made a perfect fairy ring.

You look for a name on the structure, but the writing is too old and faded to be read properly. You could walk closer, but that would mean crushing the flowers and that jusdoesn't seem right. For now, it’s enough to watch the flowers bob slightly in the wind and to hear the occasional bird song.

The sun begins to fade and the birdsong is replaced by bat calls. It is time to go home. You say goodbye to whoever is resting before you and make your way home to rest for the night.

Happy Spring and Good Night!
