Winter Time

During my usual scrolling through Pinterest I noticed a great deal of pins concerning the Danish concept of hygge.  The word was often accompanying pictures of cozy blankets draped over a chair with cups of coffee and books artistically arranged by a window overlooking a snowy scene.
I had a vague idea about hygge having encountered the word while adding to and browsing my winter themed board, but I dug a bit deeper to remind myself what it actauly meant.  As far as I can tell, there’s not a definite translation but more of a feeling or a concept, a concept of coziness during the winter months.  In Denmark people commonly enjoy hot drinks and foods while visiting friends, basically enjoying winter rather than tolerating it.
After refreshing my memory on hygge and learning how to pronounce it ( hyu-gah) I was intrigued and encouraged by the whole concept.  I decided that it seemed like a great way to not just survive winter but to enjoy the season.

I also realized that I already was pretty good at hygge. I wrap up in blankets while I read and watch movies. I enjoy sweet treats and hearty soups.  I love all kinds of hot drinks, tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.  I like candles, incense, essential oils, and a string of teapot shaped lights I bought ages ago online.  Really, I love pretty much anything cozy.

So, it’s not so much that I discovered hygge as I realized a concept I liked actually had a name.  I was also reminded how doing small things that I enjoy can go a long way to brightening my day.
It’s so easy to get bogged down by negative emotions and thoughts that we don’t take time to enjoy the little things that surround us every day, a candle with an inviting scent, a fuzzy sweater, or the company of friends.
Never underestimate the power of those little things, even if you are busy or are dealing with major problems.  I am not saying that drinking hot chocolate while wrapped in a blanket by a fireplace is all someone will need when dealing with any sort of sadness, depression, or major life disruption. I’m just saying that dabbling in this concept has been encouraging and enjoyable.
