Why Psych is the Best Show Ever… Wait for iiiiiit
While
the USA T.V. show Psych is not currently on the air, it remains, in my opinion
one of the best shows ever, perhaps of all time. It’s smart, funny, nerdy,
heartfelt, deals with crime and has some amazing scenery.
The
show deals with a very clever, but lazy man, Shawn Spencer who finds himself
claiming to be psychic to the local police to get himself out of trouble. It leads
to more trouble, because he’s so observant and good at acting that they believe
him and hire him as psychic consultant.
Hilarity
ensues as he and his best friend, Burton Guster solve crimes, make friends with
the police, and in Shawn’s case, grow closer to his father. There’s also
romance, delicious food, and tons of movie and TV references.
Through
all the wacky fun, there’s some great themes, my favorite being
friendship. Shawn and Burton (called
Gus) have been friends since elementary. While they share a great many interests,
they are very different people. Gus is a very responsible adult with a 9 to 5
job while Shawn drifted from job to job before becoming a psychic consultant.
Being
so different, they often disagree about where to eat, who is guilty of murder,
what to watch on TV, women, but they always overcome their differences in
the end. Shawn helps Gus relax and have fun and Gus keeps Shawn grounded.
Sometimes,
the pair are made fun of for still being friends after so much time has passed.
Usually the misunderstanding comes from minor characters who do not understand that adults can have
best friends, or assume that two grown men must be romantically involved in
order to spend a great deal of time together. I’ve always appreciated a show
that shows adults being friends and having fun. I think we all need friends, regardless
of our ages.
If
you love mysteries, wacky humor, movie references, I highly recommend this
show. Right now, reruns are being aired on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries and some
episodes on the USA website. Give it a try, you will not regret it.
