Among Friends


The 2018 season of the Pennsylvania RenaissanceFaire has begun. I’ve already attended two weekends, opening weekend and Celtic weekend.  Both times were amazing, even though the weather was not comfortable either weekend. Opening weekend was extremely hot and humid both days and the Sunday of Celtic weekend was rainy. I didn’t mind even though I was sweaty the one visit and soaked with rain the second.  As I like to say, “A bad day at the renaissance faire is better than a good day at work”.

Bad weather is really the only reason I’ve ever had anything resembling a bad day at the Shire of Mount Hope. Even in bad weather, there’s also a good time to be had, partially becosue of the faire itself and partially becosue of the people who visit with me.
The first Saturday I went with one of my best friends, then on Sunday we met up with our old college buddies, one of whom had never been to a renaissance faire. It was wonderful showing her around and reconnecting with everyone. We followed the storyline, went to shows, shopped, and enjoyed our time together.

Celtic weekend was just a one day visit on Sunday. The temperature was nice, but it did rain most of the day. However, we simply used umbrellas and still had a wonderful time, seeing shows, shopping, and trying out the new roast chicken stand.


There is really is no such thing as a bad day at the shire, just minor inconveniences and hiccups. This season is off to a wonderful start and I cannot wait to return.

            It’s been a very hot week, so hot that you’ve begun to feel lethargic and uncomfortable. You love summer , but this has been a bit much. What to Watch After Stranger Things

         Anyone who’s watched the Netflix original series StrangerThings will find themselves nostalgic for the 1980’s, cassette tapes, arcades, big hair, and the now classic movies that influenced every kid who saw them.           Most of us 80’s and even early 90’s kids longed to find pirate gold, fly our bikes over town, and save the town from evil, yet hilarious witches. Stranger Things brought back all of those childhood adventures and the feeling that while being a kid was hard, it was also amazing, adventurous, and inspiring. Being an adult can be all of those things, even if we are not helping neighborhood kids defeat monsters.           So, if after watching all three seasons that Netflix has to offer leaves you wanting more of similar adventures then here are five suggestions for you. 1. The Grand Arrival

  After a year of waiting the gates Mount Hope have swung open for another span of faire days upon the shire. This time  however, we welcomed a new pair of monarchs, King Henry the VIII and Catherine of Aragon.  It was exciting, yelling out "Long Live the King" for the first time, since there's never been a king there as long as I've been attending. As with any new cast the first weekend is a bit stiff, but I'm looking forward to seeing them completely at one with their roles. Also, there's so much to see even without attending the shows, the glittering jewelry shops,  colorful glass ornaments, wooden and steal swords, leather goods and that's just the sights. The shire smells of roasted turkey legs,  incense, handmade soap, apple wine, funnel cakes wrapped around sticks which are so delectable that it negates the anachronism of deep frying in Tudor Times.   The best part of it all was being there with friends and making new ones.
